Post 4 of 31 for May 2017!
I've gone through lots of warming up phases as a flutist and teacher. At various times, I've thought that warming up was the only way to sound "good enough," warming up was purely psychological, warming up was purely physical (waking up embouchure, etc.), and many combinations of these ideas.
Now? I think warming up is a very big deal, but it doesn't need to come with any kind of stress or non-negotiable beliefs about what it will or won't do for you. Ever since I wrote my Epic Warm-up (updated version found in The Aspiring Flutist's Practice Companion), I feel so comfortable knowing that in less than fifteen minutes, I can wake up my embouchure, breathing, listening, mind, and spirit, feeling motivated and ready for whatever practice session, rehearsal, or performance lies ahead!
The free printable for today is for days when you are rushing around so much that you feel like you don't even have fifteen minutes to do the Epic Warm-up. If this is you on a regular basis, I highly recommend finding a different way of organizing your day, but that's a conversation for another post :-).
This warm-up takes about a minute, is cute and "sing-a-long-able" and gets your air and your mind moving enough to kick start your flute playing. In future posts, I'll share 3 other versions of the same warm-up in different keys, but here's the first one for now!
If you've read my other posts this month, you know I'm on a quest to raise money for the Maverick Flute Choir's trip to NFA this summer. If you're a regular reader of this blog or feel that any of my posts have been helpful to you in a meaningful way, will you consider donating? It would mean a lot!

Happy Practicing!
