Appreciating Beauty

Post 7 of 31 for May 2017!

For today's post, I thought I would share with you a post I wrote about 5 years ago during a phase when I was really learning to appreciate "Artist Dates." To learn more about Artist Dates, watch the video below:

Words cannot describe how much Artist Dates have done for my playing and my teaching. As an artist on stage, appreciating beauty and magic all around me helps me dig into the music in a way that has so much more to do with emotions, stories, and transcendent ideas than just black dots on white paper. I'd also like to think that appreciating beauty as I play music helps my audience appreciate that beauty more easily right along with me.

As a teacher, appreciating beauty in the simple things allows me to explain advanced concepts in accessible language and to connect with my students in surprising and delightful ways.

The link below will take you to another blog that I toyed around with for a while. Even though I didn't follow through with it like I did with this blog, it was a meaningful experience for me and helped me crystallize my ideas so they could become a part of me.

It's my hope that you'll take a few minutes to read the $5 Beauty Feast post and (as you "walk the mall" with me) think of ways to increase your awareness and appreciation of beauty in your day to day musical life!

Happy Practicing!

P.S. When I look at the stats on my blog, I'm pleased to see all the views on my May 2017 posts so far, but no one (yet!) has stepped up to the plate to pitch in for the Maverick Flute Choir trip to NFA this summer. If my blog has brought any value to your practicing, performing, and/or teaching, will you consider donating a few dollars? Anyone that donates $40 or more will receive a beautiful copy of The Musician's Inspiration Journal designed with love and care by me and my students :-). Links below for convenience!
